Endoscopic Plantar Fasciotomy

Endoscopic plantar fasciotomy is a relatively new surgical procedure to relieve painful heel spur syndrome.  The technique involves the use of endoscopy camera equipment to visualize the procedure as it is being performed.  For this reason, the procedure is performed at an outpatient surgical center equipped with specialized instrumentation.

Traditional heel spur surgery, often requiring general anesthesia, requires an extensive recovery period which may include up to 3-6 weeks of non-weight bearing ambulation.  Endoscopie Plantar Fasciotomy, however can be performed with a combination of intravenous and local anesthesia.  Post-operatively, patients are able to ambulate unassisted the day of surgery.  Recovery time is much less, and most patients are allowed to return to conventional shoe wear in a matter of days.

The procedure itself is performed through two portals in the heel.  With direct visualization by the endoscope, the surgeon performs a selective release of the plantar fascia with the use of two specially designed small surgical blades.  The heel spur itself is not removed at this time.  This procedure requires specialized training and equipment.  Although performed through two small skin incisions, the procedure is technically very precise and the complication risk is low.

This new procedure offers many advantages over traditional heel spur surgery.  The procedure can be performed under local anesthesia, thus reducing anesthesia and operating room expenses.  Patients are able to return to work and athletic activities sooner which also is superior to traditional surgery to remove heel spurs.  Risk of complication is low if performed by an experienced, trained surgeon familiar with the technique.
